> The best times to post on Instagram in 2026 for every day of the week, compiled from 7 studies of about 48 million posts, with a day-by-time heatmap.

Page: https://omnisocials.com/best-time-to-post-on-instagram
Checked: October 17, 2026

Weekday afternoons into early evening, about 3 to 9 PM in your audience's local time. That is where 7 studies from 2026 agree most. Tuesday is the strongest day, Saturday the weakest.

## The short answer: Post on weekday afternoons and evenings, 3 to 9 PM local time.

Seven engagement studies published between March and October 2026 name different hours, from 5 AM to 8 PM. The widest agreement is weekday afternoon into early evening, roughly 3 to 9 PM in your audience's local time, Monday to Wednesday. Overnight, about 1 to 5 AM, is the time most studies say to avoid.

Instagram itself gives no clock time. Its creator FAQ says the best time is "when your audience is awake and most active" and points you to your Insights. Use the map above as a start, then test it against your own numbers.

- **Best days**: Tuesday, Wednesday (Tuesday is a top day in 4 studies)
- **Best time**: 3 to 9 PM (Weekdays, your audience's local time)
- **Worst time**: 1 to 5 AM (Saturday is the weakest day)

## What each 2026 study found. They agree on the band, not on the hour.

| Study | Sample | Best times | Best days | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sprout Social, Mar 2026 | 2B engagements, 307K profiles | Mon 2-4 PM, Tue 1-7 PM, Wed 12-9 PM, Thu 12-2 PM | Mon to Thu | Weekends, early mornings |
| Buffer, Sep 2026 | 9.6M posts | Thu 9 AM, Wed 12 PM, Wed 6 PM | Wed, Thu | 1-5 AM, Fri, Sat |
| Hootsuite, Jul 2026 | 1M+ posts | Mon 3-9 PM, Tue 3-7 PM | Mon, Tue, Thu | Before 8 AM, after 10 PM |
| Metricool, Jun 2026 | 24.4M posts | 6-9 PM, most at 8-9 PM | No day ranking | 2-5 AM |
| SocialPilot, early 2026 | 7M posts | 7-9 AM | Tue, Wed, Thu | Saturday |
| Later, Apr 2026 (2024 data) | 6M+ posts | 3-6 AM, most at 5 AM | Monday | Saturday |
| Sociality.io, Oct 2026 | 335K posts | 8 PM-12 AM | Small differences | Day matters little |

Sociality.io compared each post with the same account's usual post. Every day's win rate fell between 48.5% and 51.4%, so the time of day matters more than the day.

## Do Reels need a different time? Not in a way the studies agree on.

| Format | What the studies say |
|---|---|
| Reels | Sprout Social: "the algorithm prioritizes user activity times over content format", so Reels follow the same windows. Other studies conflict: midnight (Later, Metricool), 8 AM-12 PM (SocialPilot), evenings (Sociality.io). |
| Carousels | No agreement: 5 AM (Later), 7-9 AM (SocialPilot), Sunday 7-9 PM (Metricool), midnight to 6 AM (Sociality.io). |
| Stories | How often matters more than when: Buffer says 1 to 2 a day. Named times differ: 11 AM-2 PM (Metricool), 6-8 AM and 7-9 PM (Later). |

## What changed for timing. Recency still counts.

- **Sep 2026: Recency is a ranking value** Adam Mosseri, in his ranking series: "Beyond engagement, we also try to value originality, recency, breaking content." A fresh post still has an edge. (https://www.instagram.com/p/DdENi2fP59I/)
- **Apr 2026: Originality counts for photos and carousels too** Accounts that mostly post unoriginal photos or carousels drop out of recommendations, as Reels already did. The rule does not change what followers see. (https://creators.instagram.com/blog/rewarding-original-creators-on-instagram)
- **Dec 2025: Hashtags capped at five** Instagram cut the hashtag limit from 30 to 5 per post or Reel. Mosseri says hashtags do not add reach, so timing and content carry more weight. (https://www.threads.com/@creators/post/DSalXGPCWM4)
- **Jan 2025: Watch time, likes and sends lead ranking** Mosseri named the top three signals and said to watch average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach in Insights. (https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-shares-algorithm-insights-2025/738034/)

## Find your own best time. The map is a start, your Insights decide.

1. **Open Most active times** In the Instagram app, open Insights, then Total followers, then Most active times. It shows the days and hours your followers are on Instagram.
2. **Plan in your audience's time zone** Every study uses local time. If most followers live in New York, plan in Eastern Time, wherever you are.
3. **Test one slot at a time** Post the same kind of content at two times for two to three weeks. Compare reach and sends per reach, not likes alone.
4. **Schedule the evening posts** The best band runs into the evening. Schedule posts ahead so a 7 PM post goes out without you at your desk.
5. **Do not chase the minute** Day-to-day differences are small: 48.5% to 51.4% in one study. A strong post at a fair time beats a weak post at the best time.
6. **Judge a slot after three days** Metricool found most Instagram views arrive in the first three days. Compare slots on their 72-hour numbers.

## Sources and method

We read the 2026 Instagram timing studies from Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, Metricool, SocialPilot and Sociality.io. Together they cover about 48 million posts plus Sprout Social's 2 billion engagements. Each study gets one vote per day and three-hour block: plus one when it names the block as a best time, minus one when it says to avoid it. The votes are scaled from 0 to 100, so the map shows where the studies agree, not an engagement rate. HubSpot's survey of marketers is left out because it measures opinion, not engagement.

## FAQ

### What is the best time to post on Instagram?

Weekday afternoons into early evening, about 3 to 9 PM in your audience's local time. Seven studies from 2026 agree on that band more than on any other. They disagree on the exact hour, from 5 AM (Later) to 8 PM (Metricool), so check Most active times in your Insights too.

### What is the best time to post on Instagram today?

It depends on the day. Monday 6 to 8 PM, Tuesday 3 to 6 PM, Wednesday 6 to 9 PM, Thursday 7 to 9 AM, Friday and Saturday 6 to 9 PM, and Sunday 9 PM to midnight, all in your audience's local time. The heatmap on this page marks today's row.

### What is the best day to post on Instagram?

Tuesday, then Wednesday. Tuesday is a top day for Sprout Social, Buffer, SocialPilot and Hootsuite, and Wednesday is Buffer's best day. The gap between days is small: Sociality.io found every day's win rate between 48.5% and 51.4%.

### What is the worst time to post on Instagram?

Overnight, about 1 to 5 AM in your audience's local time (Buffer, Metricool, Hootsuite, Sprout Social). Saturday is the weakest day in four studies. Later is the exception: its 2024 data found 3 to 6 AM best.

### What are peak posting hours on Instagram?

3 to 9 PM on weekdays, local time. Monday and Tuesday 6 to 9 PM are the slots most studies name, followed by Monday and Tuesday 3 to 6 PM and Wednesday 6 to 9 PM.

### Does posting time still matter on Instagram?

A little. Recency is one of the values Instagram ranks on (Adam Mosseri, September 2026), and Instagram's advice is to post when your audience is awake and most active. But the differences in the data are small, so what you post matters more than when.

### Which time zone should I use?

Your audience's. Every major study uses the audience's local time. If your followers are spread out, use the time zone where most of them live; Insights shows their top cities.

### Is the best time different for Reels, carousels or Stories?

Not in a way the studies agree on. Sprout Social found "the algorithm prioritizes user activity times over content format". Format results conflict: Later and Metricool say midnight for Reels, SocialPilot 8 AM to 12 PM, Sociality.io evenings.

### What is the 5-3-1 rule on Instagram?

A content-mix rule of thumb shared by creators, not an Instagram rule. The version most often quoted: of every nine posts, five give value (teach or entertain), three show the people behind the account, and one sells. No Instagram data backs the exact numbers.

### How does OmniSocials suggest a time to post?

It looks at your workspace's own posts, weighted toward recent ones, and for Instagram it also uses when your followers are online. You see the suggestion when you schedule a post, and Analytics shows a day-by-hour heatmap. Until 15 posts are analyzed, it shows labelled industry defaults.
