Bluesky has had hashtags since February 2024. It sets no cap on how many a post can hold: each one counts toward the 300-character limit, and a single tag links up to 64 characters. Through the API, an app can also attach up to 8 tags that do not show in the text; the Bluesky app does not use them.

Tapping a hashtag opens a menu to see its posts, see that person's posts with it, or mute it. Custom feeds can be built around a tag. Bluesky publishes nothing on hashtags and reach, and in January 2026 it said it is "exploring topic tags as a way to help people find posts".

## Use hashtags well. Specific beats many.

1. **Use one or two specific tags** There is no limit, but every tag costs characters. One or two that match your topic is common advice, not a Bluesky rule.
2. **Write the topic in plain words** Search matches words in posts, not only tags. A clear first line helps people find the post either way.
3. **Check that the tag links** A tag of only numbers, like #2026, does not link. Add a letter, like #Q2026, and keep it under 64 characters.
