Discord caps a message at 2,000 characters. Nitro subscribers can send up to 4,000 in the app; without Nitro, a longer message turns into a text file. Webhooks and bots, which schedulers post through, get 2,000: Discord's API takes no more message text than that.

An embed adds room: its description holds 4,096 characters, and a message can carry up to 10 embeds with 6,000 characters across them. A poll takes a 300-character question and up to 10 answers of 55. OmniSocials holds Discord posts to 2,000 characters and counts most emoji as 2.

## Write Discord messages that get read. Lead with the news.

1. **Put the news in the first line** People skim a busy channel. Say what happened or what to do first, and the details after.
2. **Plan for 2,000, not 4,000** Nitro's 4,000 characters only apply to what a Nitro member sends. Webhooks, bots and schedulers stop at 2,000.
3. **Count markdown and links** Asterisks, underscores and the address behind a masked link are part of the text and count toward the 2,000.
4. **Use an embed for long notes** When you post through your own webhook or bot, an embed description holds 4,096 characters, and a message can carry 6,000 across its embeds.
5. **Keep poll answers short** Each answer takes 55 characters. Short answers are easier to read and tap on a phone.
6. **Leave room for emoji** OmniSocials counts most emoji as 2 characters, so a message full of emoji reaches the limit sooner.
