# Mastodon

> Connect a Mastodon account on any server to publish posts and threads.

OmniSocials works with Mastodon accounts on any server, not only mastodon.social. When you connect, OmniSocials reads your server's settings, such as its character limit, and uses them in the editor.

## What you can publish

| Thread | Several posts that reply to each other, each with its own text and media |

Posts are published as public posts.

## Requirements

- A Mastodon account on any Mastodon-compatible server.
- The **Manage social channels** permission in your OmniSocials workspace.

Each workspace connects one Mastodon account.

## Connect Mastodon

1. Click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar, then click the channels button under the workspace. The **Channels** window opens.
2. Under **Add a channel**, click **Mastodon**.
3. In **Connect Mastodon**, enter your server under **Server**, for example mastodon.social. You can also click one of the suggested servers.
4. Click **Continue**.
5. Sign in on your server and authorize OmniSocials.

You can also paste your full handle, such as @name@fosstodon.org, or the address of your profile. OmniSocials keeps only the server name.

## Mastodon options in the editor

Click the Mastodon icon in the channel bar to see and edit the Mastodon version of your post.

- **Threads**: click **Add post below** in the toolbar to add a post to the thread. When your text is longer than your server allows, click **Split into thread** to split it into several posts.
- **Alt text**: click **ALT** on an image to describe it. Alt text is published with the image on Mastodon.

## Limits

| Text | Set by your server, 500 characters on mastodon.social |
| Media in a post | Up to 4 images, or one video. Not both in the same post. |
| Image files | JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP, up to 16 MB |
| Video files | Up to 99 MB. Smaller servers may accept less. |

The character count in the editor uses the limit of your server.

## Troubleshooting

**The server name isn't accepted.** Check the spelling. The server name looks like a web domain, such as mastodon.social.

**OmniSocials can't reach the server.** Check the server name and try again.

**A video is rejected.** Your server may have a lower video limit than 99 MB. Upload a shorter or smaller video.
