3 to 5 feed posts a week, Reels and carousels included, is the baseline in the largest study. Accounts that posted more grew faster, and Instagram says posting often does not cost you followers.

## The short answer: 3 to 5 posts a week, Reels included, plus Stories most days.

The largest study, Buffer's 2.1 million posts from 102,000 accounts, puts the sweet spot at 3 to 5 feed posts a week. Feed posts there means photos, carousels and Reels together: one budget, not three. Accounts that posted more grew faster, from +0.26% followers a week at 3 to 5 posts to +0.66% at 10 or more.

Instagram's own numbers point the same way. Its creator FAQ says the creators with the fastest follower growth post 10 or more Reels a month. Adam Mosseri said in April 2024 that posting often does not cost you followers.

- **Feed posts**: 3 to 5 a week (Photos, carousels and Reels together)
- **Reels**: 10+ a month (Instagram's fastest-growing creators)
- **Stories**: 1 to 2 a day (Keeps followers close, adds little growth)

## Plan a week at your pace

- **Minimum**: 2 posts a week and 1 Stories a day (Tue 4:00 PM reel, Thu 8:00 AM carousel). 1 to 2 posts a week keeps the account moving (Buffer).
- **Sweet spot**: 4 posts a week and 2 Stories a day (Mon 7:00 PM reel, Tue 4:00 PM carousel, Wed 7:00 PM reel, Thu 8:00 AM photo). 3 to 5 posts a week, Buffer's sweet spot. Two Reels a week is close to Instagram's 10 a month.
- **Growth**: 7 posts a week and 3 Stories a day (Mon 7:00 PM reel, Tue 4:00 PM carousel, Wed 12:00 PM photo, Wed 7:00 PM reel, Thu 8:00 AM reel, Fri 7:00 PM carousel, Sun 9:30 PM reel). 6 to 9 posts a week grew followers about 70% faster than 3 to 5 in Buffer's data.
- **All in**: 11 posts a week and 4 Stories a day (Mon 3:00 PM carousel, Mon 7:00 PM reel, Tue 4:00 PM reel, Tue 8:00 PM photo, Wed 12:00 PM carousel, Wed 7:00 PM reel, Thu 8:00 AM reel, Thu 1:00 PM photo, Fri 7:00 PM reel, Sat 7:00 PM carousel, Sun 9:30 PM reel). 10 or more posts a week grew fastest (+0.66% followers a week), if quality holds.

## How often to post each format. One feed budget, not three quotas.

| Format | How often | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Feed posts (all) | 3 to 5 a week, more if quality holds | Buffer, 2.1M posts; Hootsuite |
| Reels | About 2 to 3 a week (10+ a month) | Instagram creator FAQ; Dash Social: 1 to 3 a week for engagement per Reel |
| Carousels | Part of the feed total; no study gives a number | Metricool: carousels get 9x the saves of single images |
| Stories | 1 to 2 a day, up to 4 to 5 | Buffer; Dash Social: 30+ a week had the best completion |
| Trial reels | No set number; use them to test ideas | Instagram, Dec 2024 |
| Live | No data, so no number | None found |

## More posts, more growth. Buffer's 2.1 million posts, week by week.

| Posts a week | Follower growth a week | Reach per post vs 1 to 2 posts |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | +0.12% | Baseline |
| 3 to 5 | +0.26% | About +12% |
| 6 to 9 | +0.44% | About +18% |
| 10 or more | +0.66% | About +24% |

Buffer compared each account with its own baseline. Weeks with no posts grew slower than the account's normal. Dash Social (3.3M posts, Aug 2026) found engagement per post peaks at 2 to 3 posts a week: per-post rates dip as you post more, while total reach and growth rise.

## What accounts of each size post. Observed averages, not targets.

| Followers | Feed posts a week | Stories a week |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10K | 2 | 3 |
| 10K to 100K | 3 | 4 |
| 100K to 500K | 5 | 15 |

Later, 19 million feed posts and 32,000 Stories from 2023. These are what accounts did, not what works best; bigger accounts simply post more.

## What changed for posting frequency. More is fine, unoriginal is not.

- **Sep 2026: Mosseri's ranking series: experiment** The last part of his ranking series was about reach for creators: experiment as trends shift, use trial reels, and watch engagement rate over total views (reported by Social Media Today). (https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-chief-shares-algorithm-insights-and-posting-tips/831326/)
- **Apr 2026: Unoriginal photos and carousels lose reach** Accounts that mostly post unoriginal photos, carousels or Reels drop out of recommendations. Posting more reposts does not help. (https://creators.instagram.com/blog/rewarding-original-creators-on-instagram)
- **Dec 2024: Trial reels** Trial reels go to non-followers first, with metrics after about 24 hours. You can test an idea without filling your followers' feed. (https://about.fb.com/news/2024/12/trial-reels-try-content-non-followers-first-see-what-perfoms-best/)
- **Dec 2024: Post often, but do not burn out** Mosseri: "Posting often generally helps with reach but it's important not to burn out." (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDPU_hfSgnZ/)
- **Apr 2024: Posting often does not lose followers** Mosseri: "One big misconception I see about Instagram is that you lose followers if you post too often. We looked into this recently and it's actually not the case." (https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5l1RcXgdgR/)

## Post more without burning out. Consistency is the goal.

1. **Pick a pace you can keep** Mosseri's advice is a schedule "that feels sustainable for you". Start at 3 a week and add one when it feels easy.
2. **Count Reels in the feed total** Buffer's 3 to 5 includes Reels and carousels. Two Reels and two carousels is a full week.
3. **Reels for reach, carousels for saves** Instagram calls Reels "the best way to reach new audiences". Metricool found carousels get 9x the saves of single images.
4. **Test ideas with trial reels** Trial reels go to non-followers first. Try a new format there before it reaches your followers.
5. **Batch the week, then schedule it** Plan and schedule a week in one sitting. Gaps cost growth: weeks without posts grew slower than normal in Buffer's data.
6. **Keep it original** Since April 2026, accounts that mostly post unoriginal photos, carousels or Reels lose recommendations. More reposts do not help.

## Sources and method

The frequency numbers come from Buffer's study of 2.1 million posts from 102,000 accounts, which compares each account with its own baseline, and from Instagram's own creator FAQ and Adam Mosseri's posts. Dash Social's 2026 study adds engagement per post, and Later's 2023 data shows what accounts of each size really post. Where no study gives a number (carousels, Live), the page says so instead of guessing.

## FAQ

### How often should you post on Instagram?

3 to 5 feed posts a week, counting photos, carousels and Reels together, plus Stories most days. That is the sweet spot in Buffer's study of 2.1 million posts. Accounts that posted 10 or more times a week grew fastest, so post more if you can keep the quality up.

### How many times a day should you post on Instagram?

There is no set number. 3 to 5 feed posts a week is the baseline, and in Buffer's data growth kept rising at 10 or more a week, which is more than one a day. Mosseri says posting often does not cost followers. For Stories, 1 to 5 a day works.

### How many Reels should I post a week?

About 2 to 3. Instagram says the creators with the fastest follower growth post 10 or more Reels a month. Dash Social found 1 to 3 a week gives the best engagement per Reel.

### Will posting too often hurt my reach?

No. Mosseri (April 2024): "you lose followers if you post too often. We looked into this recently and it's actually not the case." Engagement per post can dip as you post more, but total reach and follower growth go up in Buffer's data.

### Is it bad to post on Instagram every day?

No, as long as the quality holds and you can keep it up. Mosseri's warning is burnout, not reach: pick a schedule that feels sustainable.

### How many Instagram Stories should I post a day?

At least 1 to 2 (Buffer). Brands that posted 30 or more Stories a week, about 4 to 5 a day, had the best completion rates in Dash Social's 2026 data. Stories keep followers engaged but do little for growth.

### How long should you wait between Instagram posts?

No study sets a minimum gap, and Instagram has not published one. Most views arrive in the first three days (Metricool), so spreading posts across the week gives each one room.

### How often should a business post on Instagram?

The same baseline applies: 3 to 5 feed posts a week plus Stories. Hootsuite recommends at least three. Businesses in Hootsuite's data averaged 9.3 posts a week in early 2025.

### What is the 5-3-1 rule on Instagram?

A content-mix rule of thumb shared by creators, not an Instagram rule. The version most often quoted: of every nine posts, five give value (teach or entertain), three show the people behind the account, and one sells. No Instagram data backs the exact numbers.

### Can OmniSocials show how often I post?

Yes. Analytics has a posting streak card that counts your posts per week, and the calendar shows the week ahead, drafts included, so gaps are easy to spot.
