# Instagram Auto DM: auto reply to comments with a DM

> OmniSocials sends a DM to everyone who comments a keyword under your Instagram post or reel: someone comments GUIDE and gets your link, offer or guide in a DM within seconds, once per person, with an optional public reply under the comment. The same automation answers a keyword in a DM or a story reply, and it runs on Facebook Pages too, where the DM lands in Messenger.

## How it works

1. **Pick a post and a keyword.** One post or reel (also one published outside OmniSocials), your next post, or every post. Keywords match as a whole word by default, in capitals or not ("guide", "GUIDE" and "the guide please" all count), or part of a word, or any comment or message.
2. **Write the DM and an optional public reply.** The DM is plain text up to 1,000 characters; a link in it shows as a link. Up to 10 public replies, one picked at random per comment.
3. **It runs.** Everyone who comments the keyword gets the DM a few seconds after the comment, once per person. A second comment from the same person is skipped.

One automation can listen to several triggers. One setup can run on Instagram and a Facebook Page at the same time: OmniSocials makes one automation per channel with the same keywords, DM, public reply and limits. On Facebook the DM lands in Messenger and the activity log shows the person by name, since Facebook has no @handle.

## Rules and limits

- Meta's rules are the same on Instagram and Facebook: one private reply per comment, only within 7 days of the comment, and a second message only after the person answers (24-hour window).
- One DM per person per automation.
- Up to 180 DMs an hour per account and platform. A match above that is skipped and listed in the activity log; it is not sent later.
- Optional limits: stop after a number of DMs, or on an end date. An automation can be paused and resumed at any time.
- Not available: a follow check before the DM ("follow gate"), collecting emails inside the chat, and button messages. To collect emails, put a link to a form in the DM.
- Needs an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator) or a Facebook Page connected to the workspace. OmniSocials uses the official Instagram and Facebook APIs, never the account password.

## Set it up

- **In the app:** Automations, New automation, Send a lead magnet; or turn on Comment to DM in the post options when you create a post (one setup with a switch per channel when the post goes to Instagram and Facebook).
- **With an AI assistant:** with the OmniSocials connector in Claude or ChatGPT, ask in plain words, for example "Send everyone who comments GUIDE on my last post the link to my guide". The assistant sets it up after you confirm. Create takes `platform` (`instagram` by default, or `facebook`), and for a post published outside OmniSocials `instagram_media_id` or `facebook_post_id`. A new post takes `comment_dm_automation` (with `platforms` for Instagram, Facebook or both). The API key needs the Automations scope (`automations:read`, `automations:write`).
