An Instagram caption can hold 2,200 characters, hashtags and line breaks included, on posts, carousels and Reels alike. The feed folds it behind "more" after about 125 characters; Instagram does not publish the exact cut, and it moves with the device and your line breaks, so put the hook first.

Your bio takes 150 characters and up to 5 links. Since December 2025 a post or Reel takes up to 5 hashtags, down from 30, and a caption can tag up to 20 accounts.

## What changed for captions. Fewer hashtags, more search.

## Write captions that get read. The fold decides.

1. **Put the hook in the first line** The feed shows about 125 characters. Say the point there; the rest is for people who tap "more".
2. **Use keywords people search** Instagram Search reads captions, and public professional posts can reach Google. Name the topic in plain words.
3. **Keep hashtags to 5** More than 5 is no longer allowed on posts and Reels. Pick specific ones and put them in the caption.
4. **Use line breaks for long captions** Short paragraphs read better past the fold. The counter's copy button keeps blank lines with an invisible character.
5. **Bio: who, what, why follow** 150 characters is about two short lines. Say who you are and what people get, and use the 5 links for the rest.
6. **Write alt text for images** Alt text describes a photo for screen readers. Through the API it takes up to 1,000 characters on images and carousel images.
