# Instagram post sizes and dimensions for 2026

> Feed posts 1080 x 1350 (4:5), the 3:4 grid at 1080 x 1440, Stories and Reels 1080 x 1920 (9:16), plus carousel, profile photo and Reel cover sizes.

Checked: October 17, 2026

1080 × 1350 (4:5) works everywhere, schedulers included. Posting from the app, 1080 × 1440 (3:4) fills the new profile grid. Stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920.

## The short answer: Use 1080 × 1350 (4:5). It works in the app and in every scheduler.

Instagram's app takes photos from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait and stores them at up to 1,080 px wide. That makes 1080 × 1440 the tallest post you can share from the app, and the only common size the new 3:4 profile grid shows uncropped.

Schedulers, OmniSocials included, publish through Meta's API, which stops at 4:5. So 1080 × 1350 is the safe default: it fits everywhere and loses only a thin strip on each side of the grid. Stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920 (9:16).

- **Feed post**: 1080 × 1350 (4:5, works in the app and via the API)
- **Tallest in the app**: 1080 × 1440 (3:4, fills the profile grid)
- **Stories and Reels**: 1080 × 1920 (9:16)

## Every Instagram size in one table. In pixels, width × height.

| Format | Size (px) | Aspect ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | The safe default, app and API |
| Tall post | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | App only; the API stops at 4:5 |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | The grid trims 135 px from each side |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | The widest allowed, small in the feed |
| Carousel | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 (any allowed ratio) | One ratio for every slide; 20 slides in the app, 10 via the API |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Video clips up to 60 seconds |
| Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | At least 720 px and 30 fps |
| Reel cover | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | The grid shows the center 3:4; the Help Center suggests 420 × 654 |
| Profile photo | 320 × 320 | 1:1 | Commonly used; Instagram publishes no size |

Sizes from the Instagram Help Center and Meta's publishing reference, read on October 17, 2026. The 3:4 grid tile is measured by third parties; Instagram does not publish it.

## What the app allows, and what a scheduled post must fit. Schedulers publish through Meta's API.

| Limit | Instagram app | Schedulers (the API) |
|---|---|---|
| Tallest photo | 3:4 (1080 × 1440) | 4:5 (1080 × 1350) |
| Widest photo | 1.91:1 (1080 × 566) | 1.91:1 (1080 × 566) |
| Items per carousel | Up to 20 | 2 to 10 |
| Image file | Not published | JPEG only, up to 8 MB |
| Image width | Stored at up to 1,080 px | 320 to 1,440 px, scaled to fit |
| Reel length | Up to 20 minutes | 3 seconds to 15 minutes |
| Reel file | Not published | MP4 or MOV, up to 300 MB |

Every scheduler, OmniSocials included, publishes through Meta's API, so the right column is what a scheduled post must fit. OmniSocials crops feed photos outside the API's range to 4:5, around the subject.

## What changed for image sizes. The grid went tall.

- **May 2025: 3:4 photos** Instagram started to accept 3:4 photos in single posts and carousels, the shape most phone cameras shoot. 1080 × 1440 became the tallest feed post. (https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-adds-support-phone-camera-aspect-ratio-images/749205/)
- **Jan 2025: A rectangular profile grid** The square profile grid became tall rectangles. Third parties measure the tile at 3:4, so square and 4:5 posts lose their sides on the grid. ## Size it once, post it anywhere. Six rules that cover most posts.

1. **Default to 1080 × 1350** It works in the app and through every scheduler, and the grid trims only about 34 px from each side.
2. **Use 1080 × 1440 from the app** The tallest post takes the most screen and shows whole on the grid. The API cannot publish it, so post it from the app.
3. **Keep the subject in the center** The grid shows the center 3:4 of every post. Keep faces and text inside it on square and 4:5 posts.
4. **Export at 1080 px wide** Instagram stores photos at up to 1,080 px wide. Wider ones are sized down, and under 320 px they are enlarged.
5. **One ratio per carousel** Every slide takes the orientation you pick. Through the API, all images are cropped to the first one's shape.
6. **Keep Reel text off the edges** The caption and buttons cover the bottom of a Reel. Meta's Reels ad guide keeps the top 14% and bottom 35% clear.

## Schedule it with OmniSocials

## Sources and method

Every size on this page comes from Instagram's Help Center or Meta's content publishing reference, read on October 17, 2026. Where Instagram publishes no number (the profile photo, the grid tile), the page says so and labels the commonly used figure. Grid crop math assumes the 3:4 tile third parties measure.

## FAQ

### What is the best Instagram post size in 2026?

1080 × 1350 (4:5). It works in the app and through schedulers. If you post from the app, 1080 × 1440 (3:4) is now allowed and fills the most screen.

### Is 1080 × 1440 allowed on Instagram?

Yes, in the app: Instagram supports ratios up to 3:4, which is 1080 × 1440. Through the API that schedulers use, no: the limit there is 4:5, and a 3:4 image can fail with an aspect ratio error.

### Why does my profile grid crop my photos?

Since January 2025 the profile grid uses tall rectangles instead of squares. Third parties measure the tile at 3:4, so square and 4:5 posts lose part of their sides. A 1080 × 1440 post shows whole.

### How many photos can a carousel have?

Up to 20 photos and videos in the app. Through the API, and so through schedulers, a carousel takes 2 to 10 items.

### Can carousel slides have different sizes?

No. The orientation you pick applies to every slide. Through the API, all images are cropped based on the first one.

### What size is an Instagram Story?

1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 ratio. Video clips run up to 60 seconds each.

### What size is an Instagram Reel cover?

Design it at 1080 × 1920 (9:16) and keep the subject in the center 3:4, which is what the grid shows. Instagram's Help Center lists 420 × 654 as the recommended cover size.

### What is the Instagram profile picture size?

Instagram does not publish one. 320 × 320 pixels is the commonly used upload size, and the photo shows as a circle, so keep the subject centered.

### Does Instagram compress photos?

It keeps photos between 320 and 1,080 px wide at their own resolution when the ratio is supported. Wider photos are sized down to 1,080 px and narrower ones are enlarged to 320 px.

### What is the Instagram post size in inches or centimeters?

Instagram works in pixels, so inches and centimeters do not apply on screen. If a design tool asks, 1080 × 1350 px is 15 × 18.75 inches (38.1 × 47.6 cm) at 72 DPI; export it by pixels.
