There is no limit. LinkedIn's own Pages guide suggests 3 to 5, and hashtags no longer add reach on their own. Paste a post below to count its hashtags.

## The short answer: No hashtag limit. Use 3 to 5, and do not count on reach.

LinkedIn publishes no cap on hashtags in a post, in the app or through its API. Its Pages best practices say: "Identify 3-5 hashtags that are top of mind for your organization and add them to your posts when relevant." Hashtags count toward the post's 3,000 characters.

Hashtags still label a post. LinkedIn told Social Media Today they help viewers "easily identify what a post is about", and that it also weighs "conversation topics and keywords". When it retired Creator Mode in 2024, LinkedIn said hashtags "are no longer necessary for highlighting the most relevant content in the app".

- **Hashtag limit**: None (LinkedIn publishes no cap)
- **LinkedIn's advice**: 3 to 5 (From its Pages best practices)
- **Reach from hashtags**: Little (LinkedIn also reads topics and keywords)

## Count the hashtags in a post

- Caption: up to 3,000 characters, about 150 show before "more".
- Hashtags: no fixed limit.

## Where hashtags have a limit on LinkedIn. Only two features cap them.

| Place | Limit | What LinkedIn says |
|---|---|---|
| Post (profile or Page) | No limit published | Pages best practices: "Identify 3-5 hashtags" and add them "when relevant" |
| Comment | No limit published | No current Help Center page covers hashtags |
| Hashtags linked to a Page | Up to 3 | LinkedIn Marketing Blog, July 2024 |
| Trending Employee Content | Up to 3 | LinkedIn Help Center; #XYZ and #xyz count as one |
| Posts sent through the API | No limit published | A plain #word becomes a hashtag; a literal # needs escaping |

Checked on October 17, 2026 against LinkedIn's Help Center, LinkedIn Marketing Solutions and Microsoft's LinkedIn API docs. LinkedIn's former Help Center article on hashtags now returns a 404.

## How LinkedIn's hashtag rules changed. From a discovery tool to a label.

| Rule | Before 2024 | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Hashtags per post | No limit published | No limit published |
| Hashtags on your profile | "Talks about" hashtags with Creator Mode | Removed in February 2024 |
| What hashtags do | Helped posts reach topic followers | Label the post; LinkedIn also reads topics and keywords |
| LinkedIn's advice | No more than three (LinkedIn, 2021) | 3 to 5 for Pages |
| Help Center article | Explained using and following hashtags | Returns a 404 |

The 2021 advice is Keren Baruch of LinkedIn in Social Media Today (August 2021). The current advice is LinkedIn's Pages best practices, read in October 2026.

## How the hashtag rules changed. Less discovery, more keywords.

- **Feb 2024: Profile hashtags and Creator Mode removed** LinkedIn retired Creator Mode and its "Talks about" hashtags. It said hashtags "are no longer necessary for highlighting the most relevant content in the app" (reported by Social Media Today). (https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/linkedins-removing-creator-mode-option/706585/)
- **Jan 2024: Hashtags stop adding reach** Richard van der Blom's research found hashtags now give "no additional reach boost at all". LinkedIn said it also considers "conversation topics and keywords" (reported by Social Media Today). (https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/do-you-need-use-hashtags-linkedin/704535/)

## Pick your hashtags well. Specific beats popular.

1. **Use 3 to 5** That is LinkedIn's own advice for Pages. More is allowed but adds clutter, not reach.
2. **Write keywords in the text** LinkedIn reads conversation topics and keywords, not only hashtags. Name your topic in plain words in the first lines.
3. **Mix one broad, a few specific** A common split: one broad topic tag, one or two niche tags and a branded tag. It is a tactic, not a LinkedIn rule.
4. **Write them as one word** LinkedIn's API defines a hashtag as # plus a single word, so leave out spaces. Use capitals to make long tags readable, such as #ContentMarketing.
5. **Put them at the end** Hashtags in the middle of a sentence break the read before the fold. A short line of tags at the end keeps the point up top.
6. **Save your best sets** Keep a few sets for your main topics so every post gets a fitting group without retyping.

## Sources and method

The rules come from LinkedIn's Help Center, LinkedIn Marketing Solutions and Microsoft's LinkedIn API reference, read on October 17, 2026. LinkedIn publishes no hashtag cap, so the page says so instead of repeating the 30 that some guides give. Statements about reach come from LinkedIn as reported by Social Media Today, and from Richard van der Blom's research, labeled as such.

## FAQ

### How many hashtags can you use on LinkedIn?

As many as fit in the 3,000 characters: LinkedIn publishes no hashtag limit. Some guides say 30, but LinkedIn does not state it.

### How many hashtags should I use on LinkedIn?

3 to 5. LinkedIn's Pages best practices say to "identify 3-5 hashtags" and add them when relevant. In 2021 LinkedIn advised no more than three.

### Do hashtags work on LinkedIn?

For labeling, yes; for reach, little. LinkedIn says hashtags help viewers see what a post is about and that it also weighs topics and keywords. Richard van der Blom found hashtags now add "no additional reach boost at all".

### Do hashtags count toward the LinkedIn character limit?

Yes. They are part of the post text, so they count toward the 3,000 characters, # sign included.

### Where should hashtags go in a LinkedIn post?

LinkedIn sets no rule. Most people put them on a line at the end, so the first 150 characters before "more" carry the message.

### Can you follow hashtags on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn's Help Center article on using and following hashtags now returns a 404, and LinkedIn has not published a newer one. Many guides say following hashtags is gone; LinkedIn has not announced it.

### Can a LinkedIn hashtag have spaces or symbols?

No spaces: LinkedIn's API defines a hashtag as # plus a single word. Rules for symbols are not documented, so stick to letters and numbers. In LinkedIn's Trending Employee Content tool, #XYZ and #xyz count as the same tag.

### Do hashtags work in scheduled LinkedIn posts?

Yes. LinkedIn's Posts API turns a plain #word into a hashtag, the same as typing it in the app. OmniSocials posts your hashtags as you write them.

### Can I add hashtags in the first comment?

You can, and OmniSocials can post a hashtag set as the first comment. Most people keep them in the post, where readers see them with the text.

### Can OmniSocials save LinkedIn hashtag sets?

Yes. Save hashtag sets for your topics, add one to a post in one click, or ask your AI agent to apply one through OmniSocials' MCP server.
