# Pinterest hashtags: is there a limit?

Pinterest publishes no hashtag limit. You can add hashtags to a Pin description, and up to 10 tagged topics in the app. Paste a description below to count its hashtags.

## The short answer: No published limit. Hashtags are optional; keywords do the work.

Pinterest's Help Center says you can write a description and "also include hashtags", but it names no limit. Its old hashtag help article now sends you to the Help Center home page. In the app you can also tag up to 10 related topics, which Pinterest says help "people searching for similar ideas find your Pin".

Pinterest's own advice is about keywords: "Always include a Pin title and description, using relevant keywords" (July 2025). In Tailwind's study of about 1.2 million Pins, 19% of the most viral Pins used hashtags, and Tailwind found "there likely is not any penalty" for using them.

## Let keywords lead. Hashtags are optional.

1. **Put keywords in the title first** Pinterest's advice is a title and description "using relevant keywords". It says the first 40 title characters are the most likely to show.
2. **Write the description for search** Pinterest says descriptions "are used by our algorithm to determine relevance for delivery". Describe the Pin in plain words people search for.
3. **Add a few specific hashtags, or none** 81% of the most viral Pins in Tailwind's data used no hashtags at all. If you add some, keep them specific to the Pin.
4. **Tag topics in the app** Up to 10 related topics help people searching for similar ideas find your Pin. The API has no field for them.
5. **Keep it readable** Most descriptions in Tailwind's study used five or fewer keywords. A clear sentence beats a block of tags.
6. **Save your best sets** Keep a short set of hashtags for each main topic, so every Pin on that topic gets the same tags without retyping.
