A post takes 500 characters, and a text attachment adds up to 10,000 more. Through the API an emoji counts as its UTF-8 bytes, so it uses more than one. Paste a post below to count it.

## The short answer: Posts: 500 characters. Text attachments: 10,000.

A Threads post or reply takes 500 characters. Since September 2025 you can attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post, with bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. Through the API, a text attachment only goes on a text-only post, and not on one with a poll.

Threads' API counts each emoji as its number of UTF-8 bytes, so one emoji usually uses 4 of the 500. A post takes one topic tag of up to 50 characters and up to 5 links, and alt text takes up to 1,000 characters.

- **Post**: 500 (Replies too)
- **Text attachment**: 10,000 (Since September 2025)
- **Topic tag**: 1 per post (Up to 50 characters)

## Count a post against the 500-character limit

- Post: up to 500 characters (Threads counts each emoji as its UTF-8 bytes).
- Hashtags: up to 1 per post.

## Every Threads text limit in one table. With where each number comes from.

| Field | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Post or reply | 500 characters | Threads API docs |
| Emoji | Counted as UTF-8 bytes, usually 4 | Threads API docs |
| Text attachment | 10,000 characters | Meta, Sep 2025; text-only posts via the API |
| Topic tag | 1 per post, 1 to 50 characters | Threads API docs; no periods or ampersands |
| Links | 5 per post | Threads API docs; enforced since Dec 22, 2025 |
| Poll options | 2 to 4, 25 characters each | Threads API docs; text-only posts |
| Alt text | 1,000 characters | Threads API reference |
| Thread (a chain of replies) | Not published | Each part is its own post of 500 |
| Bio | Not published | 150 circulates |
| Username and name | Not published | No number in Threads' docs |
| Direct message | Not published | No public limit |

Checked on October 17, 2026. "Not published" means Threads states no number; we leave out the guesses other guides repeat.

## What changed for text on Threads. Longer posts, fewer links.

- **Dec 2025: Posts with more than 5 links fail** Since December 22, 2025, a post with more than 5 links fails to publish through the API. Repeated links count once. (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/threads/changelog)
- **Oct 2025: Text attachments in the API** Schedulers can add text attachments to text-only posts. In the app at launch, attachments could not be scheduled or edited. (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/threads/changelog)
- **Sep 2025: Text attachments up to 10,000 characters** Meta: "we're rolling out a way to attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post." The post itself stays at 500. (https://about.fb.com/news/2025/09/attach-text-threads-posts-share-longer-perspectives/)
- **Apr 2025: Polls through the API** Scheduled posts can carry a poll of 2 to 4 options, each up to 25 characters, on text-only posts. (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/threads/changelog)

## Write posts that get read. 500 characters goes fast.

1. **Lead with the point** 500 characters is a few short sentences. Say the idea first and the detail after.
2. **Go easy on emoji** The API counts an emoji as its UTF-8 bytes, usually 4. Ten emoji can cost 40 characters.
3. **Attach long reads** A text attachment holds up to 10,000 characters with basic styles. Through the API it only goes on text-only posts.
4. **Or write a thread** A chain of replies gives every part its own 500 characters, and each part can carry its own photos.
5. **Keep links to 5** A post with more than 5 different links fails to publish through the API since December 2025.
6. **Write alt text** Alt text describes a photo or video for screen readers. Through the API it takes up to 1,000 characters.

## Schedule it with OmniSocials

Write once, and OmniSocials checks it against Threads' 500 characters and 5 links. OmniSocials schedules posts to Threads and 11 more networks from one calendar, and AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT and others) can plan and schedule through its MCP server. $10 per seat a month billed yearly, $12 monthly; 14-day free trial, a card is needed to start it. https://omnisocials.com/pricing

## Sources and method

Each limit comes from Meta's Threads API documentation or Meta's newsroom, read on October 17, 2026. Where Threads publishes no number (bio, username, DMs), the table says "Not published" instead of repeating a figure from another guide. The API limits are what a scheduled post must fit, since every scheduler posts through the API.

## FAQ

### What is the Threads character limit?

500 characters per post or reply. You can attach up to 10,000 more characters of text to a post as a text attachment.

### How many characters are in a Threads post?

Up to 500, spaces and line breaks included. Through the API each emoji counts as its UTF-8 bytes, usually 4, so emoji-heavy posts fit fewer.

### Can you post more than 500 characters on Threads?

Yes, two ways. Attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post, or write a thread where every reply has its own 500 characters.

### Do emojis count as more than one character on Threads?

Through the API, yes: Meta's docs say emoji are counted as their number of UTF-8 bytes. Most emoji are 4 bytes, so they cost 4 characters each.

### How many links can a Threads post have?

5. Since December 22, 2025, a post with more than 5 links fails to publish through the API. The same link used twice counts once.

### What is the Threads bio character limit?

Threads does not publish one. 150 characters is the figure that circulates, but we could not confirm it in Threads' own docs.

### How long can a Threads topic tag be?

1 to 50 characters, one tag per post. Through the API, periods and ampersands are not allowed in a tag.

### Is there a character limit for Threads messages?

Threads publishes no character limit for direct messages.

### How do I limit replies on Threads?

Pick who can reply when you post. The API's options are everyone, profiles you follow, mentioned profiles only, followers only, and the parent post's author only. OmniSocials does not set reply controls yet.

### How long can Threads alt text be?

Up to 1,000 characters per image or video when set through the API.
