A post takes 280 characters, or 25,000 on any X Premium tier. X counts every link as 23 and every emoji as 2. Paste a post below to count it the way X does.

## The short answer: Posts: 280 characters, 25,000 with Premium. Bios: 160.

A post on X holds 280 characters on a free account. X weighs them: every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is, and every emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2. Any X Premium tier, Basic included, raises the limit to 25,000, but only accounts mentioned in the first 280 characters get notified.

Your bio takes 160 characters, your username 15 and your display name 50. Image descriptions take up to 1,000. There is no hashtag limit; X recommends no more than 2 per post.

- **Post**: 280 (Links count as 23, emoji as 2)
- **With Premium**: 25,000 (Any tier, Basic included)
- **Bio**: 160 (Username 15, display name 50)

## Count a post the way X counts it

- Characters (free account): up to 280 characters (X counts links as 23 and emoji as 2).
- Hashtags: no fixed limit.

## Every X text limit in one table. With where each number comes from.

| Post (any Premium tier) | 25,000 characters | X Help Center, Premium page |
| Link in a post | Counts as 23 characters | X developer docs |
| Emoji, Chinese, Japanese, Korean | Count as 2 each | X developer docs |
| Username (handle) | 15 characters | X Help Center; letters, numbers, underscores |
| Display name | 50 characters | X Help Center |
| Bio | 160 characters | X Help Center |
| Image description (alt text) | 1,000 characters | X Help Center |
| Poll option | 25 characters, 2 to 4 options | X Help Center; 5 minutes to 7 days |
| Hashtags | No limit | X Help Center recommends no more than 2 |
| Mentions that notify in a long post | Only in the first 280 characters | X Help Center |
| Direct message | Not published | 10,000 circulates; the Help Center states no number |

Checked on October 17, 2026. "Not published" means X states no number; we leave out the guesses other guides repeat.

## What the app allows, and what a scheduled post must fit. Schedulers publish through X's API.

| Limit | X app | Schedulers (the API) |
|---|---|---|
| Post length | 280, or 25,000 on Premium | The same, by the account's subscription |
| Scheduling a long post | Not possible on web, per X | Possible through the API |
| Links | 23 characters each | 23 each; X charges apps $0.20 a post with a link |
| Replies to others | Allowed | Only when their author summoned you |
| Alt text | 1,000 characters | 1,000 characters |
| Poll | 2 to 4 options of 25 characters | The same, 5 minutes to 7 days |

OmniSocials reads the account's subscription when you connect X: Basic, Premium and Premium+ accounts get 25,000 characters, and the counter weighs links and emoji the way X does.

## What changed for posts and links. Links got pricier for apps.

- **Apr 2026: Link posts cost apps more** X began charging API apps $0.20 for each post with a link, against $0.015 for a plain post. In the app, links still just count as 23 characters. (https://docs.x.com/changelog)
- **Feb 2026: Automated replies need a summons** Through X's self-serve API, a reply is only allowed when the original post's author has summoned the replying account. (https://docs.x.com/changelog)
- **Oct 2025: A new view for link posts** X began testing an in-app browser that keeps the post in view. Nikita Bier said link posts got less reach because "X doesn't get a clear signal whether the content is any good." (https://x.com/nikitabier/status/1979994223224209709)

## Write posts that fit. X counts differently.

1. **Leave 23 characters per link** Every link counts as 23, short or long. 260 characters of text plus one link is 283, over the limit.
2. **Count emoji as 2** Each emoji takes 2 characters, as do Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters. The counter above weighs them for you.
3. **Mention people early in long posts** On Premium, only accounts mentioned in the first 280 characters get notified. Put tags near the top.
4. **Put the point first** Long posts fold behind Show more in the timeline. Say the point before the fold, about the first 280 characters.
5. **Use a thread without Premium** Over 280 on a free account? Split the text into a thread of connected posts instead of cutting it.
6. **Describe every image** Image descriptions take up to 1,000 characters and help people using screen readers.

## Schedule it with OmniSocials

## Sources and method

Each limit comes from X's Help Center or X's developer docs, read on October 17, 2026. Where X publishes no number, the table says "Not published" instead of repeating a figure from another guide. The Show more fold at about 280 characters is the commonly cited cut, not an official one.

## FAQ

### What is the X (Twitter) character limit?

280 characters per post on a free account, and 25,000 on any X Premium tier. X counts every link as 23 characters and every emoji as 2.

### How many characters can a tweet be in 2026?

Still 280 for free accounts. Premium subscribers, Basic included, can post up to 25,000 characters, and everyone can read those longer posts.

### Does X still have a 140-character limit?

No. Twitter raised the limit from 140 to 280 characters in November 2017. Only Chinese, Japanese and Korean text still fits about 140 characters, because each one counts as 2.

### How do I write more than 280 characters on X?

Subscribe to any X Premium tier for posts of up to 25,000 characters, or split the text into a thread of connected posts. The Premium and Premium+ tiers also let you publish long-form Articles.

### Do links count toward the character limit?

Yes. Every link counts as 23 characters, however long or short it is, because X wraps it in its own short link.

### Do emoji count as 2 characters?

Yes. Every emoji counts as 2, even ones built from several parts. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2 as well.

### What is the X bio character limit?

160 characters. Your display name can be 50 characters and your username 15.

### How long can an X username be?

15 characters, using letters, numbers and underscores. Usernames cannot contain the words X or Admin unless they are official X accounts.

### Is there a DM character limit on X?

X's Help Center does not state one. The 10,000-character figure many guides repeat is not on X's current Help Center pages.

### Can I schedule a long post on X?

Not with X's own scheduler on web, according to X's Help Center. Schedulers that post through the API can publish them for paid accounts; OmniSocials does for Basic, Premium and Premium+.
