There is no limit. X's Help Center recommends no more than 2 per post. Paste a post below to count its hashtags and characters the way X does.

## The short answer: No limit, but X recommends no more than 2 hashtags per post.

X's Help Center says: "We recommend using no more than 2 hashtags per post as best practice, but you may use as many hashtags in a post as you like." Each hashtag is part of the post's text, so it counts toward the 280 characters, or 25,000 on Premium.

Hashtags help a post show up in X search, and popular ones often become trending topics. X's open-source ranking code predicts likes, replies, reposts and other actions, and its README names no hashtag signal. Use one or two specific tags and write the rest in plain words.

- **Hashtag limit**: None (Use as many as you like)
- **X's advice**: 2 or fewer (Help Center best practice)
- **Characters**: Count toward 280 (25,000 on Premium)

## Count the hashtags and characters in a post

- Characters (free account): up to 280 characters (X counts links as 23 and emoji as 2).
- Hashtags: no fixed limit.

## X's hashtag rules in one table. From X's own pages.

|---|---|---|
| Hashtags per post | No limit; no more than 2 recommended | X Help Center |
| Where they go | Anywhere in a post | X Help Center |
| Spaces and punctuation | Not allowed; the hashtag breaks | X Help Center |
| Who finds them | Anyone who searches the tag, on public posts | X Help Center |
| Character count | Part of the post's 280 characters | X developer docs |
| In long Premium posts | Hashtags still work | X Help Center, Premium page |
| Through the API | No hashtag limit | X developer docs list none |
| In ad conversation buttons | 21 characters, # included | X ads guide |

## What X's ranking code looks at instead. From the code X open-sourced in 2026.

| Rule in the code | What it does |
|---|---|
| Predicted actions | Scores a post on the chance of likes, replies, reposts and other actions |
| Age filter | Removes posts older than 48 hours from For You |
| Author diversity | Scores each post after an author's first in a feed lower |
| Out-of-network discount | Scores posts from accounts the viewer does not follow lower |
| New-author boost | Lifts posts from authors with few impressions |
| Hashtags | Not named in the README |

From the README of xai-org/x-algorithm, read on October 17, 2026. The README lists no hashtag signal; that does not prove the model ignores hashtag text.

## What changed around hashtags. The ranking went public.

- **Aug 2026: X published its ranking weights** X added the weights its For You feed uses to blend predicted actions into a score. The README still names no hashtag signal. (https://github.com/xai-org/x-algorithm)
- **Jan 2026: The For You algorithm went open source** X open-sourced its new For You ranking, built on the same transformer design as xAI's Grok. It ranks posts on predicted engagement such as likes, replies and reposts. (https://x.com/Engineering/status/2013471689087086804)

## Pick your tags well. Fewer, more specific.

1. **Use one or two** X's own advice is no more than 2 per post. More tags take characters away from what you want to say.
2. **Pick specific tags** A tag helps people who search it find your post. Search a tag first to see what is posted under it.
3. **Place them where they read well** Hashtags work anywhere in a post. A tag inside a sentence can replace a word instead of adding one.
4. **No spaces or punctuation** X says a hashtag with spaces or punctuation will not work properly. Write multi-word tags as one word.
5. **Do not count on tags for reach** X's ranking code scores posts on predicted likes, replies and reposts. Write for those first.
6. **Save the tags you reuse** Keep a set of one or two tags per topic so every post gets the right ones without retyping.

## Sources and method

The rules come from X's Help Center, X's developer docs and X's ads guide, read on October 17, 2026. What X's ranking looks at comes from the README of the code X open-sourced in January 2026. Claims we could not check against a primary source, such as a ban on hashtags in X ads, are left out.

## FAQ

### How many hashtags can you use on X (Twitter)?

As many as you like: X sets no hashtag limit. They all count toward the post's 280 characters, or 25,000 on Premium.

### How many hashtags should I use on X?

One or two. X's Help Center says: "We recommend using no more than 2 hashtags per post as best practice."

### Do hashtags still work on X?

For search, yes: hashtags help a post show up when people search the tag, and popular ones become trends. For reach, X's ranking code scores posts on predicted likes, replies and reposts, and its README names no hashtag signal.

### Do hashtags count toward the character limit?

Yes. A hashtag is part of the post's text, so every character of it, the # included, counts toward the 280.

### Where should hashtags go in an X post?

Anywhere. X's Help Center says hashtags can be included anywhere in a post, so put them where they read naturally, inside a sentence or at the end.

### Can a hashtag have spaces or symbols?

No. X says you cannot add spaces or punctuation in a hashtag, or it will not work properly. Write multi-word tags as one word.

### Do too many hashtags hurt a post on X?

X publishes no penalty for extra hashtags, but it recommends no more than 2. Extra tags use up characters that could carry your message.

### Is there a hashtag limit when scheduling X posts?

No. X's API sets no hashtag limit either, and OmniSocials enforces none for X. The post still has to fit 280 characters, or 25,000 on any paid tier.

### Can I save hashtag sets for X in OmniSocials?

Yes. Save your tags as a hashtag set and add it to an X post in one click in the composer, or by name through the MCP server.
