How to schedule Instagram Reels in 2026 step-by-step guide

Posting Reels at the right time matters. Instagram's own data shows that posting when your audience is active can significantly increase the initial engagement that determines how far a Reel gets pushed.

Scheduling in advance solves this. You batch your content creation, set the publish times strategically, and let the tool handle the rest.

Here's how to schedule Instagram Reels, both natively and with third-party tools.

Can you schedule Instagram Reels in advance?

Yes. Instagram allows scheduling Reels natively for Professional (Business or Creator) accounts, up to 75 days in advance and up to 25 Reels per day. Third-party tools like OmniSocials and Buffer also support Reel scheduling, with additional features like multi-platform posting, analytics, and team approval workflows.

Method 1: Schedule Reels natively in the Instagram app

Instagram's built-in scheduler works for straightforward use cases. No third-party tool needed, no additional cost.

Requirements: You need a Professional account (Business or Creator). Personal accounts can't schedule posts.

Step 1: Switch to a Professional Account

If you're not already on a Professional account:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Tap Settings and privacy
  3. Scroll to Account type and tools
  4. Tap Switch to Professional account
  5. Choose Business or Creator

Note: Creator accounts are better for individual creators. Business accounts add features like contact buttons and Instagram Shopping. Either type can schedule Reels.

Step 2: Create your Reel

Open Instagram and tap the + icon at the bottom. Select Reel and create or upload your video. Add your caption, cover image, hashtags, and location as usual.

Step 3: Find the scheduling option

On the final sharing screen (before you tap Share):

  1. Tap Advanced settings at the bottom
  2. Toggle on Schedule this post
  3. Select your date and time

Instagram will show you a confirmation that your Reel is scheduled. You can find and edit scheduled Reels under your profile > Your Activity > Scheduled content.

Limits:

  • Up to 25 posts per day (Reels, photos, carousels combined)
  • Up to 75 days in advance
  • No scheduling for Reels with collaborators or Remix enabled

Method 2: Schedule Reels via Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite (on desktop at business.facebook.com) gives you more scheduling flexibility, especially if you're managing Facebook alongside Instagram.

Step 1: Connect your accounts

Go to business.facebook.com and connect your Instagram account if you haven't already. It needs to be a Business account (not Creator) to link properly with Meta Business Suite.

Step 2: Create the post

Click Create post at the top of the Planner view. Select which account(s) to post to. Paste your caption and upload your video.

Step 3: Schedule it

Instead of clicking Publish, click the dropdown arrow next to Publish and select Schedule. Set your date and time. Confirm.

You can manage all scheduled content in the Planner tab.

Note: Meta Business Suite has more features for paid advertisers, but for organic scheduling it's essentially the same as the native Instagram method. The main benefit is the desktop interface, which is easier for bulk planning.

Method 3: Schedule Reels with a third-party tool

Native scheduling works for basic use. If you're posting to multiple platforms, managing a team, or want deeper analytics, a third-party scheduler is worth it. Our Instagram scheduling tool comparison covers all the options in depth, including which handle Reels best.

Why use a third-party tool?

  • Multi-platform publishing: post the same content to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and more in one step
  • Team workflows: draft approvals before publishing
  • Analytics: see which Reels perform best and why
  • Content calendar: plan your whole month visually

OmniSocials

OmniSocials lets you schedule Instagram Reels alongside content for 10 other platforms, all from one visual editor. Flat $10/mo, no per-channel fees.

What I particularly like: the post preview shows how your caption and cover image will look on Instagram before it publishes. No surprises.

Best for: Teams and creators who post across multiple platforms.

Buffer

Buffer is the simplest option for Reel scheduling. The interface is clean, the free plan covers 3 channels, and Instagram Reels scheduling works the same as regular posts. $6/channel/month for paid plans.

Best for: Solo creators who just need reliable Reel scheduling without complexity.

Later

Later is built for visual content and Instagram specifically. The drag-and-drop visual calendar and grid preview make it easy to plan a cohesive feed around your Reels. Starts at $25/mo.

Best for: Visual-first brands where Instagram feed aesthetics matter.

When to schedule your Instagram Reels

The best time to post Reels depends on your specific audience. That said, general patterns hold:

  • Tuesday–Friday consistently outperform weekends for most accounts
  • 9–11am and 6–9pm (your audience's timezone) see higher early engagement
  • Avoid midnight and early morning: the algorithm still weighs early engagement heavily

The most reliable approach: check your Instagram Insights > Total Followers > Most Active Times. Your actual audience data beats any general benchmark. Our guide on how to schedule social media posts includes platform-specific timing data for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

For most accounts, I'd schedule Reels to publish between 9am–11am or 7pm–9pm local time on weekdays. Then monitor your Insights and adjust based on what your data shows.

Tips for better Reel scheduling results

Batch-create, don't batch-stress. Write and schedule all your Reels for the week in one session. Content creation and publishing are separate mental modes, mixing them slows you down.

Use your Reel's cover image strategically. The cover image shows on your profile grid. If your grid aesthetic matters, pick a frame that fits. Both Instagram's native scheduler and most third-party tools let you select any frame as the cover.

Check your caption and hashtags on mobile before scheduling. Captions that look good on desktop sometimes have weird line breaks on mobile. Write in the tool you're scheduling from, then preview on your phone before confirming.

Don't schedule more than 2 weeks out. Trends move fast on Instagram. If you schedule 4 weeks ahead, your Reel might reference something that's already stale. Two weeks is a safe horizon.

FAQ

Can you schedule Instagram Reels for free? Yes. Instagram's native scheduler is free, you just need a Professional (Business or Creator) account. Buffer also has a free plan that supports Instagram Reel scheduling for up to 3 channels.

Can you schedule Instagram Reels on desktop? Yes. Via Meta Business Suite at business.facebook.com, you can schedule Reels from a desktop browser. Most third-party tools (OmniSocials, Buffer, Later) also offer desktop web apps for scheduling.

Do scheduled Reels perform worse than posted Reels? No. Instagram has confirmed that scheduled posts and manually posted content are treated the same by the algorithm. The scheduling method doesn't affect reach.

Can you schedule Instagram Reels with music? If you add licensed music directly in the Instagram app (not uploaded audio), you can schedule that Reel natively. Third-party tools can schedule Reels with your own audio or voiceover, but licensed Instagram music needs to be added in the app before or after scheduling.

How far in advance can you schedule Instagram Reels? Natively, up to 75 days. Third-party tools typically allow scheduling months or more in advance.
