Threads character limits for every text field

A post takes 500 characters, and a text attachment adds up to 10,000 more. Through the API an emoji counts as its UTF-8 bytes, so it uses more than one. Paste a post below to count it.

Threads gives you 500 characters per post. That is room for one clear idea and a question. Need more? Attach up to 10,000 characters of text to the post, or split the idea into a thread of replies, each with its own 500. What do you use the extra room for? #writing

Through the Threads API an emoji counts as its UTF-8 bytes, usually 4. This counter counts them the same way.
The short answer

Posts: 500 characters. Text attachments: 10,000.

A Threads post or reply takes 500 characters. Since September 2025 you can attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post, with bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. Through the API, a text attachment only goes on a text-only post, and not on one with a poll.

Threads' API counts each emoji as its number of UTF-8 bytes, so one emoji usually uses 4 of the 500. A post takes one topic tag of up to 50 characters and up to 5 links, and alt text takes up to 1,000 characters.

What changed

What changed for text on Threads. Longer posts, fewer links.

  1. Dec 2025

Posts with more than 5 links fail

Since December 22, 2025, a post with more than 5 links fails to publish through the API. Repeated links count once. Source

  2. Oct 2025

    Text attachments in the API

Schedulers can add text attachments to text-only posts. In the app at launch, attachments could not be scheduled or edited. Source

  3. Sep 2025

Text attachments up to 10,000 characters

Meta: "we're rolling out a way to attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post." The post itself stays at 500. Source

  4. Apr 2025

    Polls through the API

Scheduled posts can carry a poll of 2 to 4 options, each up to 25 characters, on text-only posts. Source

Tips

Write posts that get read. 500 characters goes fast.

  1. Lead with the point

500 characters is a few short sentences. Say the idea first and the detail after.

  2. Go easy on emoji

The API counts an emoji as its UTF-8 bytes, usually 4. Ten emoji can cost 40 characters.

  3. Attach long reads

A text attachment holds up to 10,000 characters with basic styles. Through the API it only goes on text-only posts.

  4. Or write a thread

A chain of replies gives every part its own 500 characters, and each part can carry its own photos.

  5. Keep links to 5

A post with more than 5 different links fails to publish through the API since December 2025.

  6. Write alt text

Alt text describes a photo or video for screen readers. Through the API it takes up to 1,000 characters.

Each limit comes from Meta's Threads API documentation or Meta's newsroom, read on October 17, 2026. Where Threads publishes no number (bio, username, DMs), the table says "Not published" instead of repeating a figure from another guide. The API limits are what a scheduled post must fit, since every scheduler posts through the API.
