Bluesky shows photos in their own shape, up to 2 MB and 4000 × 4000 px, and up to 10 in a post. The banner is 3:1, 1500 × 500 works well, and both profile images stay under 1 MB.

Bluesky publishes no pixel size for posts. Since April 2026 a photo can be up to 2 MB and 4000 × 4000 px, and since June 2026 a post can hold up to 10 photos. A single photo shows in its own shape, from wide panoramas up to 1:2 tall; taller ones are cropped in the feed. For one photo, 4:5 portrait fills the most of a phone screen.
Posts with 2 photos show two squares, 4 photos show 3:2 tiles, and 5 or more scroll as a carousel. The banner is 3:1, and 1500 × 500 is the size most guides use; the profile photo shows as a circle. Both are capped at 1 MB. Schedulers send photos through the same post format, so the 2 MB cap applies to them too.
Version 1.123 raised the limit from 4 to 10 photos. Posts with 5 or more photos show as a carousel. Source
Bluesky "bumped the video upload limit from 100MB to 300MB". Source
Version 1.121 doubled the photo file limit to 2 MB and raised the resolution limit to 4000 × 4000. Source
The app compresses bigger photos; through the API they are rejected. A JPEG of 2,000 px on the long side usually fits well under.
It shows whole and takes more of a phone screen than a square or a wide photo.
The feed crops a 2-photo post to two squares and a 3-photo post to a square plus two smaller tiles. Square photos lose nothing.
The feed crops anything taller than 1:2. Opened, a post shows up to 1:4, but most people see the feed version.
The app crops the banner to 3:1 and keeps it under 1 MB. Start from 1500 × 500 or larger so the crop does not surprise you.
Bluesky shows an ALT badge on described photos, and the app takes up to 2,000 characters per image.
Every limit on this page comes from Bluesky's own announcements, its post format (the app.bsky lexicons) or its open-source app, read on October 17, 2026. Bluesky publishes no pixel sizes, so the frame sizes are our picks and labelled as such. How the feed crops photos comes from the app's code. Bluesky's developer docs still list 4 images and 1 MB per image, older than the current format.
