Discord
OmniSocials posts to one Discord channel per workspace. It posts through a webhook of that channel, so there's no bot to add to your server and no token that expires. Discord is included in every plan and doesn't use credits.
Every post shows the webhook's name and picture as the sender. To see or change them, open the webhook in Discord, under Server Settings > Integrations > Webhooks. A post can't set its own sender.
What you can publish
| Format | Details |
|---|---|
| Text | A message of up to 2,000 characters. Discord shows its own Markdown, such as bold, italic, lists and masked links. |
| Images, GIFs and videos | Up to 10 files in one message, mixed. |
| Poll | A native Discord poll. The post text is the question. |
| Forum post | In a forum or media channel, the post opens a new forum post with the title you set. |
A reel (the Reel post type) goes to Discord as one message with the video and the reel text. Discord doesn't use the reel's cover. Discord has no Stories, so you can't send a story there.
Requirements
- For Continue with Discord: the Manage Server permission in the Discord server.
- To paste a webhook URL instead: a webhook of the channel. You can make one in Discord yourself, or ask someone who manages the server to make one and send you its URL.
- The Manage social channels permission in your OmniSocials workspace.
Pick a text channel, an announcement channel, or a forum or media channel. Don't pick a voice channel: Discord lists voice channels next to text channels, and a post would land in the voice channel's chat.
Each workspace connects one Discord channel. To post to more channels, connect each one in its own workspace.
Connect Discord
- Click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar, then click the channels button under the workspace. The Channels window opens.
- Under Add a channel, click Discord.
- In Connect Discord, click Continue with Discord.
- Discord opens. Sign in if Discord asks, choose your server, choose a text channel and press Authorize.
- You're back in OmniSocials. The Channels window shows the new channel, marked Just added.
Discord makes the webhook for you. Discord doesn't tell a webhook the name of its channel, so the channel shows with your server's name and picture in OmniSocials.
Paste a webhook URL instead
Use this way when someone else manages the server, or when you want to name the webhook yourself first.
- In Discord, open Server Settings > Integrations > Webhooks.
- Press New Webhook and pick a text channel. You can change the webhook's name and picture here: every post shows them.
- Press Copy Webhook URL.
- In OmniSocials, open Connect Discord in the Channels window and click Use a webhook URL instead.
- Paste the URL under Webhook URL and click Connect.
OmniSocials checks the webhook with Discord before it connects. Discord tells a webhook URL no server name, so the channel shows with the webhook's name.
Discord options in the editor
Click the Discord icon in the channel bar to see and edit the Discord version of your post. It looks like a message in your channel: the webhook's picture and name with the APP tag, then your text, your images and videos, and the buttons under them.
Discord's settings are post options. The bar under the editor has chips for Poll, Buttons, Forum title, Silent and Ping @everyone, and Discord's page in the options panel has all of them. See Set post options.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Poll | Turns the post into a Discord poll. See Polls below. |
| Buttons | Adds up to 5 link buttons in one row under the post. A poll has no buttons. |
| Forum post title | The title of the forum post that the message opens, in a forum or media channel. See Forum and media channels. |
| Send silently | Delivers the post without a push or desktop notification. |
| Link preview | Shows Discord's preview of the links in your text. On by default. |
| Ping @everyone and roles | Lets the mentions in your text notify people: @everyone, @here, roles and users. Off by default. See Mentions. |
| Mark media as spoiler | Blurs every image and video until someone clicks it. |
Send silently, Link preview, Ping @everyone and roles and Mark media as spoiler are in the Message group of the panel. Discord has no first comment.
Polls
- Click the Poll chip, or Poll on Discord's page in the options panel.
- Turn on Add a poll.
- Fill in 2 to 10 answers.
- Under Runs for, choose 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 1 week or 2 weeks.
- Turn on Several answers per person to let people pick more than one answer.
The post text is the question. A poll goes out on its own, so a post with a poll has no images, videos or buttons. A reel can't have a poll.
Mentions
Mentions are off by default. @everyone, @here, a role or a person in your text then shows as text and notifies nobody, so a scheduled post never pings your whole server by accident. Turn on Ping @everyone and roles to let them notify people. The preview then highlights a message with @everyone or @here, the way Discord shows it to the people it pings.
To mention a role, write <@&ID> with the role's ID. To mention a person, write <@ID> with their user ID. In Discord, turn on Developer Mode to copy an ID.
Forum and media channels
In a forum or media channel, every post is a forum post with its own title, and Discord needs one. Add it under Forum post title (up to 100 characters), and the message opens a new forum post with that title. Without a title, a post to a forum channel fails with "This Discord channel is a forum. Add a post title in the Discord options."
Leave the title empty for a text or announcement channel. If you set one there anyway, the post goes out without it.
Big videos and GIFs
Discord takes files of up to 20 MB from a webhook. OmniSocials attaches every file up to that size. A larger image is made smaller first, so it fits. A larger video or GIF goes into the message as a link, and Discord plays it from there. The editor tells you when this happens, for example Discord shows a link to this video.
When the links don't fit in the 2,000 characters of the message, they follow in a second message right after the post.
Limits
| Limit | |
|---|---|
| Text | 2,000 characters. Most emoji count as 2. |
| Poll | The question (your text) up to 300 characters, 2 to 10 answers of up to 55 characters each |
| Files | Up to 10 images, GIFs and videos in one message |
| Images | JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF, up to 40 MB |
| Videos | MP4, MOV and WebM, up to 1 GB, any length |
| Buttons | Up to 5, with a label of up to 80 characters and a link that starts with https:// or http:// |
| Forum post title | Up to 100 characters |
A post needs text, media or a poll.
Analytics
Discord reports these numbers to OmniSocials:
- Reactions on each post, in total and per emoji. On the post's page, click Preview to see them per emoji under the post.
- Poll votes for each answer.
Discord gives a webhook no views, so views show N/A with the note "Discord does not report views. Open the message in Discord to see who reacted." Reach, replies, shares and clicks aren't available for Discord either, and there are no account numbers, such as the members of your server.
Social Inbox
Discord isn't part of the Social Inbox. A webhook can post in the channel, but it can't read it, so replies and messages in Discord don't reach OmniSocials.
Edit or delete a sent post
You can't edit a post after it's sent to Discord. Draft and scheduled posts can be changed until they go out.
To remove a sent post from Discord:
- Open the post's page.
- In the Discord row of the table, open the menu at the end of the row and click Delete from Discord.
This removes the message, and the second message with the links if there is one. There's no time limit. Only the webhook that sent a message can remove it, so after you reconnect Discord with a new webhook, delete older posts in Discord yourself.
Repost to Discord
A repost automation can copy the posts of another channel, such as Instagram, into your Discord channel. See Repost your posts with automations. Discord can be a destination, not a source, because a webhook can't read the channel. Reposts to a forum channel fail, because a repost has no post title.
Troubleshooting
Discord needs to be reconnected. Someone deleted the webhook in Discord or reset its URL. The channel moves to Needs attention in the Channels window, and posts to Discord fail with "The webhook was deleted in Discord, so OmniSocials can no longer post to this channel. Your Discord channel needs to be reconnected in OmniSocials." Click Reconnect: Continue with Discord makes a new webhook, or paste the URL of a new one.
Your server isn't on Discord's screen. Discord only lets you add a webhook to a server where you have the Manage Server permission. Ask an admin of the server for that permission, or for a webhook URL.
The post landed in a voice channel's chat. You picked a voice channel on Discord's screen. Reconnect Discord and pick a text channel.
OmniSocials doesn't accept your webhook URL.
- "This is not a Discord webhook URL." A webhook URL starts with https://discord.com/api/webhooks/. Copy it again with Copy Webhook URL.
- "Discord does not know this webhook." The webhook was deleted. Make a new one in Discord and paste its URL.
- "OmniSocials cannot post through this webhook." Make a new webhook under Integrations > Webhooks and paste its URL.
Discord did not confirm the post. Discord didn't answer when the post went out, so OmniSocials doesn't know if it arrived. It doesn't try again by itself, so a post never shows up twice. Look in the Discord channel, and if the post isn't there, click Try again.
You disconnected Discord, but the webhook is still in the server. Disconnecting removes the channel from your workspace and never deletes the webhook. Delete it in Discord under Server Settings > Integrations > Webhooks if nothing else uses it.
